United Way Launches Expanded Volunteer Initiative to Connect Community, Local Causes

When people come together to help their neighbors, the entire community grows stronger. With that goal in mind, United Way of Cattaraugus & Allegany Counties (UWCAC) is making it easier for community members to get involved.

Through its expanded volunteer initiative, United Way is connecting individuals, workplaces, and civic groups with meaningful opportunities to give back across Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. From one-time events to ongoing service, the initiative is designed to match people who care with causes that matter.

“Volunteers are the driving force behind so much of the good we see in our community,” said Susan McAuley, UWCAC executive director. “Our goal is to make it simple for anyone, no matter their schedule or experience, to find a way to get involved and make a difference.”

United Way partners with local nonprofits, businesses, and civic organizations to identify needs, coordinate volunteer efforts, and recognize those who give their time. Opportunities range from supporting food pantries and community programs to lending professional skills or participating in large-scale community events.

As part of this effort, United Way will host two upcoming volunteer fairs in partnership with local libraries:

  • 4:30–6:30 p.m., April 21, 2026, at the David A. Howe Public Library in Wellsville

  • 6–8 p.m., April 22, 2026, at the Olean Public Library

These one-stop events bring together nonprofits from across the region, allowing community members to explore a wide range of volunteer opportunities and connect directly with organizations seeking support.

United Way’s volunteer initiative also includes:

  • Days of Caring, a year-round celebration of volunteerism, highlighting community needs, sharing volunteer stories, and encouraging ongoing engagement.

  • Community Day, one of United Way’s longest-running traditions, brings volunteers to street corners across the region to sell special edition newspapers featuring stories of local impact. This year’s Community Day is slated for Thursday, June 4, 2026.

In addition, United Way is inviting businesses and organizations to support this work through sponsorship opportunities. Sponsorships help fund volunteer outreach, recognition efforts, and the tools needed to connect nonprofits with the volunteers they depend on.

“Whether you have an hour, a day, or a long-term commitment to give, there is a place for you in this work,” McAuley said. “Together, we are building a culture of caring that strengthens our entire community.”
