Genesis House Provides Shelter, Stability, and Hope

For individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Cattaraugus County, Genesis House of Olean remains a vital source of safety and support.
With help from United Way of Cattaraugus & Allegany Counties, Genesis House has served 50 individuals so far this year through its shelter and housing programs. Their work spans both emergency response and long-term care, ensuring that community members have a safe place to turn in times of crisis.
During the 2024–2025 Code Blue season, Genesis House provided 1,115 nights of shelter to more than 40 adults in need of emergency housing during the coldest months.
Outside of the winter season, their services remain just as critical. Throughout 2025, the organization provided 8,563 nights of shelter to 144 residents – including children and families – facing housing insecurity.
In addition to daily operations, Genesis House has invested in adding staff as well as improving its facilities, completing projects such as rebuilding a fire exit at the family shelter and replacing flooring in one of its apartments. These upgrades help ensure a safe and welcoming environment for residents.
Despite these efforts, the need continues to grow. A shortage of affordable housing in the region has made it increasingly difficult for individuals and families to transition into permanent homes. At the same time, demand for shelter services has exceeded available space, with the family shelter consistently at capacity. As a result, some families are being temporarily housed in motels while waiting for openings.
To address these challenges, Genesis House is exploring opportunities to expand, including the development of permanent supportive housing and the search for a larger facility to better serve homeless families.
For those who walk through its doors, Genesis House offers more than shelter—it provides a pathway forward.
“I was exhausted when I arrived at Genesis House. The staff brought me coffee and food and helped me feel welcome. They provided me with warm socks, emotional support, clothes, and miracles, connecting me with domestic violence services and rehab. They helped me work toward sobriety, stability and community. I feel excited about moving out of Genesis House. I am eternally grateful to Genesis House.” — Anonymous
Through compassion, care, and community support, Genesis House continues to change lives – one person, one family, and one night at a time.
