Allegany County Youth Compeer Program: Where love shows up

Fair tent display with information on volunteering to become a youth compeer.

A United Way-supported project, the Allegany County Youth Compeer Program is changing lives every day – one child, one family, one mentor at a time.

For youth living with mental health challenges, the program provides something truly special: friendship, mentorship, and the chance to just be a kid. Through one-on-one matches and group activities, children gain not only social opportunities but also a sense of belonging and emotional support that can make all the difference.

What Families Are Saying

Each year, the Allegany County Mental Health Association surveys parents, children, mentors, and providers about their experiences with Compeer. The message is clear: families feel supported, children are thriving, and volunteers are deeply rewarded.

Parents consistently highlight how the program helps their children grow – socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. Many appreciate the chance to attend free outings with their kids, which offer both fun and the comfort of connecting with other parents who understand their challenges.

One parent shared:
“Having my child in the Youth Compeer Program gives me peace of mind.”

Another added:
“My child gets to socialize and learn that she doesn’t have to be so scared of other people.”

What Kids Experience

For the children, Compeer is about friendship and confidence. They report feeling less lonely, more at ease in social settings, and excited to try new things with their mentors or fellow participants.

One child summed it up simply:
“I like the outings because I get to hang out with my family.”

What Mentors Gain

The impact extends to mentors, too. Many describe their role as one of the most fulfilling experiences of their lives. They form meaningful, long-term relationships and find joy in seeing children open up, laugh, and succeed.

Where Love Shows Up

At its heart, the Allegany County Youth Compeer Program is built on something beautifully simple: showing up. Being present. Listening. Sharing time together.

Or, as one staff member put it best:
“Compeer is where love shows up.”
